Part of the Green Schools/Green Buildings Lecture Series: "Renovating Historic School Buildings for Sustainability and Community Use" & "Port Townsend Schools Green Projects"

Renovating historic school buildings for sustainability and community use, and Port Townsend School District green projects will be the focus of topics at the third Port Townsend Green Schools Green Buildings Lecture Series on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Port Townsend City Council Chambers, City Hall. A gallery walk reception will be held at the Jefferson County Historical Society lobby from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Lectures begin at 7:00 pm and admission is free.

Renovating Historic School Buildings for Sustainability and Community Use
Lorne McConachie and Gregory Hepp, Bassetti Architects

Lorne McConachie AIA
A principal of Bassetti Architects for 18 years, Lorne has a passion for historic work and exceptional experience in restoring historic schools in Washington State. He has completed renovation designs for Roosevelt High School, Madison Middle School, West Seattle High School, Franklin High School, John Stanford International School in Seattle, as well as Stadium High School in Tacoma. A past chair of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board and current member of the Pioneer Square Preservation Board, Lorne has advised on numerous historic projects in Seattle.

Lorne has provided national and international leadership in school design. His design for Edmonds-Woodway High School (1998) captured the prestigious 1999 James D. MacConnell Award, presented by the Council of Educational Facility Planners International. Lorne has worked extensively with educators in developing design strategies for schools that support an array of teaching and learning pathways. A few examples include: developing Seattle's School Design Process in 2002, consulting with The Gates Foundation to implement the Los Angeles Unified School District's goal of developing small learning communities in over 23 existing high schools, consulting in Taiwan for Microsoft's "School of the Future" initiative, and most recently, the keynote speaker at the Korean Educational Development Institute symposium.

Gregory Hepp AIA, LEED AP
A principal with Bassetti Architects, Greg Hepp has a background in sustainable architecture and 25 years experience in the design and management of public educational facilities. Greg leads the firm's sustainable design practices. He has put his deep knowledge to work on such projects as St. Thomas School (Washington State's first LEED for Schools Gold Certified building); Cottage Lake Elementary School; Lynnwood High School (both WSSP projects which received special funding for their sustainable strategies); as well as Seattle City Hall (LEED Gold Certified); Barn Beach Reserve (2009, "AIA Top 10 Green" regional award winner); and Seahurst Park Environmental Science Center in Burien.
As a member of the Washington High Performance Schools Committee, Greg helped develop sustainable strategies for Washington State K-12 public schools. Since 2007, Greg serves as the designated Green Schools Advocate for US Green Building Council's Cascadia Chapter. He has also been the featured speaker at sustainability seminars for community, architectural and educational associations.
